2. SBM stands for Soluable Blast Media. SBM is similar to RBM in nature. SBM/RBM surface is created by using a Soluble Blast Media of Hydroxylapatite (HA) crystals to create a rough texture, and then the surface is cleaned with 20% acid solution.

SLA (Straumann) surface is created with large grit Aluminum Oxide particles followed by acid etching with Sulfuric and Hydrochloric acid to remove the imbedded particles (SLA – Sandblasted with Large grit followed by Acid etch). The acid etch requires as high as 40% nitric acid solution to remove the particles, but the 40% acid itself is a big problem because the acid residue has negative influence on osseointegration. Morever, the cost of SLA is much lower than SBM.

Below are several studies regarding how SBM is superior to other surface treatments such as HA, TPS and Machined surface.
